On the June 10th episode of “The Majority Report,” Sam Seder interviewed Leon Botstein about his essay “Are We Still Making Citizens?” from Democracy‘s Spring 2015 issue.

In his essay, Botstein argues that education in a democracy should help us consider how to live “not as lone individuals but as citizens,” an identity that has been jeopardized by technology and increased partisanship. According to Botstein, restoring the public school system will promote a critical citizenry oriented to the common good. He writes: “The rigor of thinking and argument, the rules of evidence, and the recognition of rhetoric and ignorance are part of the education we must provide children and young adults if we are going to retain our freedoms.”
