Democracy hosted a foreign policy roundtable discussion at the Metropolitan Club in Washington, D.C. on June 6. The event was sponsored by Democracy board member Robert Abernethy and featured U.S. Sen. Jack Reed (D, R.I.) and former Director of Policy Planning at the State Department Anne-Marie Slaughter as special guests.

Democracy hosted a foreign policy roundtable discussion at the Metropolitan Club in Washington, D.C. on June 6. The event was sponsored by Democracy board member Robert Abernethy and featured U.S. Sen. Jack Reed (D, R.I.) and former Director of Policy Planning at the State Department Anne-Marie Slaughter as special guests. The discussion covered a wide range of topics in U.S. foreign policy: the crisis in Europe, the recent upheavals in the Middle East and the Arab world, the Obama Administration’s controversial use of drone strikes, the defense budget and the coming sequestration, among others.

The discussion was moderated by Democracy editorial chair E.J. Dionne and editor Michael Tomasky. Among the attendees were former U.S. Rep. Tom Perriello (now head of the Center for American Progress Action Fund), Steve Clemons of The Atlantic, William Galston of the Brookings Institution, Jane Mayer of The New Yorker, Susan Glasser of Foreign Policy, Bill Hamilton of The New York Times, Charles Kupchan of Georgetown University, James Mann of Johns Hopkins SAIS, and Rosa Brooks of the New America Foundation.
