Education is often a strange, in-between policy area. It’s top of mind for parents and emotionally resonant with voters (consider COVID-19 school closings), but gets little attention from federal policymakers, especially conservatives interested in devolution and local control. Donald Trump has taken that conservative apathy to its logical conclusion, gutting the Education Department and putting a former professional wrestling executive at its helm. All this is happening as American children’s test scores continue to plummet. So for this installment of our “Next Agenda” series, we wanted to focus not just on repairing recent harms to our education system, but fixing longstanding problems like poor literacy rates and nascent ones like artificial intelligence in schools. The problems are large, but we think these solutions are, too.
